Bayon Temple

Description

How to Get There

Bayon Temple is located at the exact center of Angkor Thom, about 10 km north of Siem Reap city. From Siem Reap, visitors can reach Bayon by tuk-tuk, taxi, minivan, or bicycle in 20–40 minutes, depending on traffic and mode of transport. The most common route is via Charles de Gaulle Road, passing Angkor Wat and entering Angkor Thom through the South Gate; continue north for about 1.5 km to reach Bayon. The temple is well-signposted, and parking is available at the entrance. Bayon is included in most Angkor Wat tours and is easily accessible as part of the Small Circuit route.

Things to Do

At Bayon, explore the iconic towers adorned with over 200 serene stone faces, believed to represent Avalokiteshvara or King Jayavarman VII himself. Wander through the intricate bas-reliefs depicting scenes of Khmer history, daily life, and mythology. Climb the upper terraces for panoramic views and discover hidden carvings and apsaras throughout the temple. Guided tours are available and highly recommended for deeper insight into the temple’s symbolism and history. Photography is especially rewarding due to the dramatic architecture and atmospheric lighting.

Best Times to Visit

The best time to visit Bayon Temple is during the dry season from November to April, when weather conditions are cooler and more comfortable. Early mornings offer beautiful soft light on the stone faces and fewer crowds, while late afternoons provide dramatic shadows and a quieter atmosphere. The temple is open daily from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm.
