Bei Temple

Description

How to Get There

Prasat Bei is located near the South Gate of Angkor Thom, about 9 km north of Siem Reap city center and close to Phnom Bakheng, Baksei Chamkrong, and Thma Bay Kaek temples. Visitors can reach it easily by tuk-tuk, taxi, or bicycle from Siem Reap. The temple lies just west of the Angkor Thom South Gate causeway and can be accessed by a short 100-meter walk from the main road or by cycling through nearby jungle paths.

Things to Do

Explore the small 10th-century Hindu temple built by King Yasovarman I, featuring three brick towers aligned north-south on a laterite platform. The central tower houses a linga, while the lintels of the central and south towers are carved with depictions of Indra on the elephant Airavata. It’s a quiet spot for appreciating early Khmer architecture and detailed carvings away from the crowds.

Best Times to Visit

The temple is open daily from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM. The best time to visit is during the dry season from November to April when the weather is cooler. Early mornings or late afternoons offer softer light and fewer visitors, enhancing the experience.

Additional Information

Prasat Bei is included in the Angkor Archaeological Park pass and is often overlooked by tourists, making it ideal for those seeking a peaceful visit. It is commonly visited as a quick stop on popular Angkor tours such as the Sunrise, Sunset, Small Circuit, or Grand Circuit tours. Facilities nearby are limited, so bring water and sun protection. The temple was restored by the École Française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO) in the 1960s.
