Phimeanakas Temple

Description

How to Get There

Phimeanakas Temple is situated within the Angkor Thom complex, about 11 kilometers from Siem Reap city center. The most common way to reach the temple is by tuk-tuk (approximately 28 minutes), taxi (around 15 minutes), or bicycle (about an hour) from Siem Reap. Visitors typically enter Angkor Thom via the South Gate and follow signs toward the Royal Palace area. Phimeanakas is easily accessible on foot from nearby landmarks such as the Terrace of the Elephants and Baphuon Temple, making it a convenient stop on a larger Angkor tour.

Things to Do

At Phimeanakas, visitors can explore the temple’s unique pyramid-shaped architecture and admire the intricate carvings and guardian lion statues that reflect the grandeur of the Khmer Empire. The site is surrounded by lush greenery, offering tranquil walking trails and opportunities for peaceful strolls and photography. Informative signboards along the paths provide historical context, and the temple’s legends-such as the story of the king’s nightly visits to the tower-add a layer of mystique to your visit. While climbing to the top is restricted to protect the structure, the surrounding area offers plenty of vantage points for appreciating the temple’s design and ambiance.

Best Times to Visit

The best time to visit Phimeanakas is during the dry season, from November to April, when the weather is cooler and more comfortable for exploring. The cool season (November to February) is especially pleasant but also the busiest, so expect more visitors. For a quieter experience, consider visiting in the early morning or late afternoon, or during the shoulder months of May, June, September, or October. The temple is open daily from sunrise to sunset, generally 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Additional Information

Entry to Phimeanakas is included with the Angkor Archaeological Park pass, which starts at $37 for a day and can be used for multiple temples in the area. The temple is part of the Royal Palace complex and is not as crowded as some of the more famous Angkor sites, making it ideal for a peaceful visit. Facilities are limited, so bring water and sun protection. Hiring a local guide is recommended for deeper insight into the temple’s history and legends. Allow at least an hour to fully appreciate the site and its surroundings.
