Phnom Bakheng, also called Bakheng Temple, is one of the most popular places to visit in Siem Reap Province, Cambodia. It is a hilltop temple and is especially famous for its beautiful sunset views.
History of Phnom Bakheng
Phnom Bakheng was built in the late 9th century during the reign of King Yasovarman I, a famous king of the Khmer Empire. The temple was originally used for both Hindu and Buddhist worship.
King Yasovarman chose Phnom Bakheng as the center of his capital city which later became part of the Angkor civilization.
How to Get to Phnom Bakheng Location
Phnom Bakheng is located inside the Angkor Archaeological Park, about 1.5 kilometers from Angkor Wat.Visitors must walk uphill through a forest path to reach the temple. The walk takes about 15–20 minutes. The path is not very difficult, but it can be tiring in hot weather.
Sunset at Phnom Bakheng
Phnom Bakheng is one of the best sunset spots in Siem Reap. From the top, you can see wide views of the Angkor area and Angkor Wat in the distance.
Because sunset is very popular, the number of visitors allowed at the top is limited. It is best to arrive early to secure a spot.
