Prohm Kel Temple

Description

How to Get There

Prohm Kel Temple is located near the main gate of Angkor Wat within the Angkor Archaeological Park, about 7 km from Siem Reap city center. From Siem Reap, visitors can take a tuk-tuk or taxi along Sivatha Boulevard toward Angkor Wat. The temple is easily accessible by a short walk through trees from the road or by bicycle, which can be rented in Siem Reap. It is close enough to Angkor Wat to be included as a quick stop on a temple tour.

Things to Do

Explore the small ruined sandstone chapel built in the Bayon style under King Jayavarman VII, originally one of 102 hospital chapels across the Khmer Empire. Visitors can admire the temple’s Buddhist and Hindu carvings, including devatas and decorative roundels, as well as the somasutra water drainage channel. The site offers a quiet, less crowded spot for reflection and photography amid the Angkor complex.

Best Times to Visit

The best time to visit Prohm Kel is during the dry season from October to April when the weather is cooler and rain is minimal. Early mornings and late afternoons provide softer light and fewer visitors, ideal for peaceful exploration and photography. Avoid midday heat and larger crowds.

Additional Information

Prohm Kel is included with the Angkor Archaeological Park pass. It is a lesser-known temple often skipped on standard tours, making it a peaceful alternative to busier sites. Facilities nearby are limited, so bring water and sun protection. Restoration work has been ongoing to preserve the temple’s structure and carvings. Due to its small size and proximity to Angkor Wat, it’s best visited as part of a broader Angkor temple itinerary.
